Frequently Asked Questions

What is WCAG?

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is the international standard for web accessibility, published by the W3C. Version 2.1 has three conformance levels: A (minimum), AA (recommended for most sites), and AAA (highest). Most laws and policies reference WCAG 2.1 Level AA.

What is the difference between A, AA, and AAA?

Level A covers the most basic accessibility requirements like text alternatives for images and keyboard access. Level AA adds contrast ratios, resize support, and consistent navigation β€” this is the standard most organizations target. Level AAA includes enhanced contrast, sign language, and simpler reading levels β€” it's aspirational for most sites.

Do I need to meet every criterion?

For a given conformance level, yes β€” WCAG requires that all criteria at that level (and below) are met. However, criteria only apply to relevant content. If your site has no video, video-related criteria don't apply. This checklist lets you mark items as not applicable.

Is my checklist data saved?

Your check marks are saved in your browser's localStorage so they persist across sessions. Nothing is sent to any server. Use the Export button to save a copy as text.
